Although disused for decades, the old Queens Cinema in Bayswater was a popular local landmark. Our refurbishment, Derwent London’s first standalone residential scheme, has restored it for the neighbourhood – complete with its pair of listed telephone boxes – as apartments and a ground-floor shop. We reinstated the canopies in polished steel and used three tiles for the cladding: a triangulated white tile for the ‘rusticated’ base, smoother panels for the deco horizontals above, divided by vertical glazed baguettes that pick up a deep blue from the beautiful original tiled signage.
